Maria Guzmán Capron

b. Milan, Italy

Maria Guzmán Capron’s assemblages, sculptures and installations are reflections on indefinable physicality. Her shapes and textures are multimedia amalgamations of mass-produced and handmade patterns, creating a liminal abstracted body that renegotiates the boundaries of masculine and feminine form. Capron addresses the social and political nuances of being a woman, a person of color, and an immigrant, through loud, clashing, and overtly kitsch materials, fluid forms, and installations that demand space and recognition. Assemblage of flaccid and voluptuous parts embody the complexity of conflicting identities, utilizing harlequin approaches to material and form with embellished and painted patterns, embroidery or small ceramic objects inspired by pop culture and the layers of history found in thrift store bric-a-brac.

Capron has exhibited at City Limits (Oakland, CA); Alter Space (San Francisco, CA); N.B.D. Projects (San Francisco, CA); and Capital (Chicago, IL). She was the recipient of the Graduate Painting Fellowship at California College of the Arts and has been featured in Art in America. She was Artist in Residence at Diverseworks (Houston, TX) in 2008 and has lectured at the Contemporary Arts Museum (Houston, TX). Guzmán Capron lives and works in Oakland at CTRL + SHFT, a studio collective she co-founded in 2015.
